THE GLITCH REVIEWS

This is a review of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' 512MB Secure Digital (SD) Media Card.

Disney 512MB SD Card

'Pirates Of
The Caribbean'

512MB SD Card

Disney my*style Pirates of the Caribbean SD Card Products.

The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' SD card is an ideal way to store and carry all your music, photos, homework and more!Loaded with great Pirates of the Caribbean extras—exclusive buddy icons and wallpapers. The cards also include bonus content from the hit movie Cars.

Secure Digital (SD) media is currently one of the most used forms of storage, with many types of device now using the format, everything from Digital Cameras, Digital Photo Frames, Personal Digital Assistants, Satellite Navigation and even mobile phones. So it's always good to have a few spare SD cards to hand, but with such a saturated market, it's difficult to know what to buy. As with all digital storage media it's best to stick with well known branded SD media, thus when I started to investigate the origins of Disney's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' branded SD cards, it was very nice to find that they were, in fact, based on quality Lexar media.

The 80MBs of pre-installed 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Cars' content won't be something you will necessarily be interested in, but at least the content is of decent quality and because it's exclusive to Disney, you shouldn't find it anywhere else!

There are 10 wallpapers in each of the two film categories; they are offered in three different resolutions: 1024 x 768, 1280 x 960 and 1600 x 1200. Both categories also have what are called 'Buddy icons', which are basically small, animated icons (GIFs) of some of the characters from the two films.

There is also a high quality (not HD), Apple 'Quicktime' trailer of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean - at worlds end' film.

Other Pirates Of The Caribbean SD Cards

For my review I cleared down the SD card to get it's maximum formatted storage capacity of 486MB.

Some would be put off by the fact that it's not the largest capacity SD card around, and you would be right, but this is relative. It's not massive when you compare it to other larger capacity cards that are now available, but it's still a good size. For instance, you could fit around 280 'High Resolution' (6 Mega Pixel) images on it, or around 170 'High Quality' (128kbps+) MP3 audio files, or many thousands of standard word documents!

During my testing, it took approximately 2 minutes to write a single 410MB file, (equating to a write speed of a little over 3MB/s), while 271 photos totaling 462MB took just over 4 minutes to write. To put these two tests into context, they indicate an average write speed of 21x (2.5MB/s).

Although benchmarks are useful, especially when real world tests are performed, I still believe in the day to day usage tests and during my testing I was surprised how well these inexpensive cards seem to perform, probably a consequence of their Lexar heritage!

Whether loading images onto a digital photo frame, storing routing data from a satellite navigation device, even as a simple storage device on a PDA, it seem to work without issue. The most pleasing test was when used with a digital compact camera, it seemed to work every bit as well as the much faster card I removed, with no real delay in writing the information to the device...all in all a satisfying economical purchase!

Advantages:

Inexpensive
Quality Lexar media
Pre-installed Disney content
Seems quicker than it's 14x rating

Disadvantages:

Not the largest of capacities

Conclusion: I was pretty impressed by these SD cards, they did not suggest anything particularly special, but even if you don't appreciate the pre-installed Disney content, then the Lexar branded card will more than make up for this.

On sheer price alone they would be a bargain, but they're good quality cards (and have the Disney content) to boot!
