FireFly

JumpDrive FireFly is an ultra-portable USB flash drive that provides a convenient solution for storing, transferring, and sharing multimedia and more. It’s ideal for storing lots of great pictures, your favorite music, and important files.

Lexar offers a comprehensive line of high-performance JumpDrive products designed with a wide variety of features, capacities, and capabilities.

One of the latest USB memory sticks to come from Lexar is very small, in fact it's less than 45mm long, and weighs in at a little under 6 grams, (when removed from it's cover), but don't let these diminutive dimensions fool you, this is one serious flash drive.

The device is made from strong plastic and so feels solid and well build, even it's cover feels robust enough to withstand the abuse of everyday use.

There are a range of storage capacities available from 256MB all the way up to 8GB, which is the version I am reviewing today. Each different capacity 'Firefly' comes in a different colour. With the 4GB version in white and the 512MB version in Green, and so on.

The firefly has an attractive blue activity LED at it's rear, allowing you to easily see when the device is being written to or read from, I have to assume that it gets it's name from this flashing LED on it's rear...cute!

The device is a 'plug and play' affair for all modern versions of Windows, but if you still have a Windows 98 computer all is not lost, as a quick visit to the Lexar site will yield a 98 driver file that can be downloaded.

Now down to the important things, read/write speeds.

First I tested the transfer speed of a single large file of 105MB; it took just 14 seconds to write to the stick and under 5 seconds to read back. Next I tested using a 410MB, and if anything this was handled even better, taking less than 44 seconds to write to the stick and 18 seconds to read back.

Lastly I tested a group of 102 photos (335MB in total); it took just 39 seconds to write and 11 seconds to read them back in.

These read/write speeds were all excellent.

The only bad thing I can think of to say about the Firefly, is that it didn't come with a lanyard in the box, so you will need to locate one if you want to wear the device round your neck.

Advantages:

Good value for money
Small Dimensions
Very fast reading speeds
Fast writing speeds

Disadvantages:

No lanyard in the box

Conclusion: I didn't expect too much from this device being one of the smallest and cheapest 8GB sticks available, but don't let it's diminutive dimensions or price put you off, it's one of the best designed, fastest USB memory sticks I have owned to date...highly recommended.
